My work explores how kings and gurus (religious leaders) maintain power and authority in local societies and provide social services to people in multi-layered power structures throughout the colonial and postcolonial periods. My geographical focus is on the state of Karnataka in South India. I am also interested in the ways in which such complex power structures create discrimination and the ways in which liberation from discrimination is imagined and transformed into people’s movements.
